The Ghost Horse of Highbury
Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 15:30 Hello! Today has been a GOOD day. This afternoon I was running a taster session for a new project that I'm working on. It's called Generation Next and is aimed at young fathers. Our taster day took it to the next level and kicked off with a BBQ. Yes! Myself and two other artists, Tony on sound and Romain on visuals, spent the afternoon getting to know the young men and their families. In between eating burgers and drinking loads of soda we introduced them to our creative practices. I had a great conversation with Craig who told me about how he'd broken his leg. After a long conversation about football, Craig mentioned a book he had read. It was about the history of Arsenal football club and the ghost of a horse that haunts the North Stand of the old Highbury Stadium. GHOST HORSE! I know, crazy. Well, apparently when Highbury was being built a horse fell into a large ditch that had been dug by the builders. The builders and public tried to get the horse out but couldn't. The decision was made that the horse would be left to die and the ditch (with the animal in it) was 'filled in'. As the story goes, years later, fans in the North Stand reported hearing the cries of a horse. This story made my day. Craig had set my mind on a mad trip, I starting think 'who was the last person to leave the horse, how long did it take for the horse to die, why couldn't they get it out, what have to it's owner?' Often people are me what's involved in running a workshop. If I've got time I'll speak more about the process, but if I'm in a rush I'll usually say 'it's similar to teaching'. Today made me rethink that. What I did today was not teaching in the tradition sense, it was more an exchange of ideas of experiences, of stories.
